Thanks for the response Rowena, Martin. A difficult question, for sustainability academics especially. A few thoughts:

Undoubtedly great irony encapsulated in the huge global roadshows that surround climate change negotiations, Al Gore staring out of a plane window in "The Inconvenient Truth", and a recent tweet by Leonardo Di Caprio that he was taking a year off filming to "fly around the world and save the environment".

Duncan Clark at the Guardian has written a lot on air travel and climate, and has produced this visualisation on the history of air travel with Robin Houston, who presented it at a recent Cleanweb London. http://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2014/aviation-100-years

One obvious way of reducing the need to travel is telepresence, using Google Hangout or Skype etc. However, we are still social primates, and it will be a good while till they rival the full experience of face to face socialising. Moreover, I suspect the overall impact of the development of telepresence is to further drive globalisation, and demand for air travel.

From an open data perspective, Open Knowledge are planning more regional events, which will hopefully reducing travel miles than the global OKFests.
