It's not another format / storage. How we build it and the specific
functionalities should be discussed on github (let's not shoot it before
the idea is fully conceived) and I'm sure we're not going to create a
second OSM. I see the site like a geonames for transport.
I have created 2 repos: one for currently discussing the vocabulary, one
for taking stations.io forward. Both can be found here:

If you want access to a repo, let me know. Otherwise, we accept pull
requests and issues.

Exactly the problem we want to solve with this I believe.

Calculations take into account data. Datasets are not perfect, thus we
should be able to correct calculated data.
