[Openglam_members] Next call

Good idea.

My issues include the Eurocentric focus and time zone problems for calls. But, I'm used to often being the only American in the room.

I also think we still have not achieved goals of creating good quality OpenGLAM distributable materials for cultural institutions that still don't get it. I also think having lounges and meeting spaces for outreach at conferences is something still lacking, too, at least here in the USA.

I haven't been able to do it alone though and I have found myself challenged by lack of incentive (I'm self employed and work 40+ hours a week) and I think if more finances were available to support what we are doing things could come along faster here (and everywhere). And before people tell me no money is available...I don't believe it (I'm a grant writer now....). ;)

We have Wikipedians in residence in all types of places but people still can't comprehend open licenses, releasing artwork and collecting open license work, wiki data and more. There is a gold mind here in the USA, and when I chose to leave OKF as a contractor for a full time with benefits job at WMF a ton of opportunity was lost to spread the gospel of OpenGLAM here.

Hell, I had to consult the Smithsonian on redoing their volunteer contract because it says the Smithsonian will "own" everything they photograph and write - including for Wikimedia. Not true...and the lawyers still don't get it.

Now that I am self employed - with ObamaCare (ha!) - I find myself occasionally regretting that I went to WMF, leaving behind my OpenGLAM work.

I feel like a great opportunity has been lost here in the USA over the past few years.

/end rant

Following on from our recent summit, the organisational strategy of Open Knowledge is currently being discussed internally. As soon as this has been more fleshed out, also the future role of the OpenGLAM community will be discussed in more detail.

We think they worked exceptionally well when we were preparing for an event such as OKFest. As we did not have anything like that this year, it becomes a bit hard to see the purpose other than updating each other what we are working on. While this is very often interesting to hear, I think the mailing list is a better tool for that.

Is it mostly to learn from initiatives from other countries? To build stuff together? To encourage each other? I think as the original goal of these calls is not happening at the moment, we need to re-think what we want to achieve, and then come up with the best way to achieve that.
>>>

After that we can open up the discussion how this group fits in that and if it aligns with what each individual member wants to get out of its membership. Maybe the group should grow for example, maybe not. Maybe it is more useful to setup monthly lectures where one person invited to explain something about a project they are doing and everybody on the OpenGLAM public list can tune in. Stuff like that.
