The 500 error looks like another way of producing an error I thought I fixed
last weekend. Basically mongo is refusing to do a query without an index,
because it would take too long, and we weren't catching the exception. It
looks like my fix needs to be applied to some other part of the code that I
missed.

Of course, it's only a bandaid, but it at least tells the user what the real
problem is, which they can then get fixed.
