[wdmmg-discuss] Raphael in Opera - libretto problems

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the list, so very short intro. I'm a chief of dev lab in Centrum Cyfrowe Projekt: Polska from Poland.

Last week we made our first release (http://otwartybudzet.pl) - the website publishing a polish national budget for 2011. To visualize the budget we used Raphael library and I know from Friedrich Lindenberg that you started using it as well. So here is my problem:

We faced this problem with Raphael, that IE and (especially!) Opera is not rendering it right. It's a problem with SVG implementation in both. With Opera the problem is sirous when it comes to interaction and text nodes -when the text is long the rendering takes ages. E.g. we've got one label 356 letters long that should appear on mouseover, but to render it in Opera it takes about a second (!!!), which effectively breaks the UX and from the user point of view seems like a bug!!

My question is then:how do you handle this issue in a wider picture? I mean, do you care about super-correct-cross-browser UX or just treat it as a browser problem and as it's a small amount of users you don't care that much?

For now, we decided that we can't provide this super correctness - we stick to the SVG as a W3C standard and don't take full responsibility for theimplementation problems (other browsers work just fine!). We plan though to inform Opera users that it's not our bug, but their browser manufacturer's one.

All the best from Poland,
Krzysztof Trzewiczek
