A company (Solis Energy) has announced an off-the-shelf solar power solution for unmanned wifi routers, among other products designed to keep large wifi nets up and running. 

The news item mentions Minneapolis in the US and Paris (presumably in France, but it doesn't actually specify) as already running large muninets on solar energy.
