[MyData & Open Data] this group's thoughts on definitions

Hello,
While there may or may not be some rhetorical fine tuning to do with the
term "my data", I think the definition posted on the website is quite
functional. Suggestions to define "my data" on the basis of individuals'
rights or agency will be strategically limiting.

If descriptive, an agency-based definition would exclude a lot of
relevant data that is collected by third parties without any direct
"data transaction", and about which individuals (or groups for that
matter) may have no knowledge. As the fields of urban analytics and
remote sensing continue to develop this will become more pressing, but
even now, the mechanisms through with (big) data is culled and exchanged
complicates a definition based on individuals rights or agency over that
data.

If prescriptive, we're left arguing tautologically (ppl should be able
to agency over their data! what's their data? data they should able to
exercise agency over!).

Thinking about how the "my data" concept would be mobilized in
Crawford's notion
<https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2325784> of big
data due process highlights this tension nicely, I think.
Cheers,
c
