Last week, privacy advocates (both within and outside of the EU) all hailed
the EU Court of Justice's decision to invalidate the Data Retention
Directive. However, the US also made great strides in data privacy
legislation- just in case you missed it.

The US Senate Commerce passed the Car Data Privacy
Act<http://epic.org/2014/04/car-data-privacy-bill-moves-fo.html?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed>,
which significantly safeguards drivers from unauthorized access to their
personal records, while the House of Reps, approved the student data
protection bill<http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2014/04/house_overwhelmingly_passes_st.html>,
which would restrict access to student data (for example, random id numbers
to be used instead of SS numbers).
