Apologies for the mass email when everyone in Scotland has their minds elsewhere, but I wanted to alert everyone to the online open data competition run by Apps for Europe. It’s open for on-line entries from now until 31st December. A selection of winners will win their travel, accommodation and conference ticket to Future Everything in Manchester in Feb next year and have a chance to meet investors/network with people in the open data/tech space. To apply with your app ( it doesn’t need to be fully formed- a working prototype is fine too)– you need to fill in the on-line form which is here-Apps for Europe There is a film on the website which shows the shortlisted entries from last year to get a flavour of what was shortlisted. Last year’s winner- Bikecityguide (http://www.bikecityguide.org/ )managed to raise 140k euros through crowdfunding.

As this doesn’t involve you having to take part in a hack event and doesn’t compete with the events happening in Scotland, it seems like a straightforward way to perhaps get some support for apps which could support companies with their business development- so please do circulate this to your networks.

Cheers, Jackie

The criteria:

Selection criteria

· The application must use at least one open data source that originates in Europe. Combinations with other data sources are allowed. Look at the resource section of our website to find more information on how to find open data sources in Europe.
· Only fully filled out entry forms will be taken into consideration.
· The competition is open to all applications (web, phone, pad, Facebook etc.).
· You can participate individually or as a team. In the latter case, the prize will be awarded to the team leader.
· Participants may submit as many applications as they want, any application that meets the rules can participate in the contest.
· The application must at least be a working prototype.
· All rights concerning the idea and the development of the app remain with the sender.
Judging

All online entries will be judged by the Apps for Europe partners. They will determine who goes on to the International Business Lounge @ FutureEverything and get to meet and mingle with the international investor community. The jury will look at several aspects of each entry:

· Team behind the app, who are you and why can you make this app a success
· Innovative use of open data, are you showing the world the potential of open data
· Business value an opportunity, what is your business model, how are you going to make money
· Originality of the app, are you creating a new application or service
· Potential social value and market, what are you contributing to the improvement of society
· Usability & user friendliness of the app, is your application easy to use
