[open-data-day] Data Expeditions Experiment on Open Data Day

Hi All,

Thought I'd just quickly drop a note about an experiment we tried on Open
Data Day in Berlin and Amsterdam.

The School of Data is currently experimenting with what we are calling
"Data Expeditions". These are ways of learning about data by actively
working with it. Everyone has a set role - so we think of them a bit like
playing Dungeons (or Data) and Dragons. [0]

In our experience so far, running these offline and as an accompaniment to
Hackathons works particularly well, as not all participants need to be able
to code and it gives clearly defined roles for people. We've seen some
great teams forming.

This set worked particularly well this time as we first ran the Open Data
Census - so people already had a good feel for what data was out there by
the time they started...

FYI: We've put together a toolkit [1], including character sheets, for
anyone who would like to run a data expedition in their area and we'd love
your feedback on how they go, so we can keep building on these guides for
guides to help people leading them around the world.

I've also put up a quick blog post about the expeditions in Amsterdam and
Berlin - thought it could be interesting here.
