Subject: [Open-cultures] Lessons & Literature | my Lecture about "Open
Cultures"
To: open-cultures at berlinergazette.de

Hi,

in my lecture on "Open Cultures" I introduced today the work of Berliner
Gazette in the context of what many people, including the philosopher
Slavoj Zizek, see emerging as a "vast new domain of the "common": shared
knowledge, forms of cooperation and communication, which can no longer
be contained by the form of private property."

Using the case example of Berliner Gazette, now active for 15 years, I
was trying to point out some curcial issues that concern and challenge
the work of the library as a public institution.

Does the library account for the "vast new domain of the 'common'"? Can
it re-fashion itself as fit for the digital age by becoming accomplice
with the actors and networks of the "vast new domain of the 'common'"?

One of my lessons is that librarians and journalists can learn a lot
from each by sharing knowldge and experiences about the struggles with
the current condition, e.g. by questioning the *filter mechanisms* at
work in their respective practise.

Below please find some background literature that I used for my lecture.
I uploaded the texts onto our server as PDF files. You can download the
maerial. Most of it under a Creative Commons license.

Kind regards

Krystian
