I agree that it would be useful to mention open tools more explicitly
(open code is discussed).

It's not clear to me yet what the intended audience for the original
essay was, nor what it could be for a revised version. Once that is
clarified, I think it would be much easier to shape the piece
accordingly. I left some more specific comments in the document.
