Dear All

Open Knowledge hosts both open science and open hardware and design working
groups and one area where our interests cross is in open source lab
hardware, which is a growing field of interest internationally both within
academia and within broader society, for example through maker spaces and
DIYBio groups.

A group of us in the UK would like to propose an open lab hardware weekend
in Summer 2015 that could take simultaneously in different locations, in
the same manner as the Open Data Day hackathons [1].

It would be a great showcase for some of the amazing hardware already out
there [e.g. 2,3,4] and a chance to get people solving real lab problems and
demonstrating the power of open designs and manufacturing.

Would you be interested in hosting (or asking someone to host) a weekend
event in your city/institution/space? I've booted up a really basic
planning pad you can contribute to if so: https://pad.riseup.net/p/la

Please do add other potential event hosts and suggestions, we could work
together on funding and advertising if you think it is a good idea. This is
a soft call for participants but if we manage to get a few spaces on board
we will make a larger announcement next month.

Thanks very much everyone and I look forward to hearing from you! Do get in
touch with any comments or suggestions.

Jenny
