The main idea behind the introduction of treemaps was to allow people to create their own Billion-Dollar-O-Grams. I agree with you on the false implication of a whole that doesn't exist, but this is also true for McCandless treemap. Maybe we could clarify the independence of the individual rectangles by adding some whitespace in between (like McCandless did). Also we could leave some space not filled with rectangles by using a less strict space-filling algorithm.
