*Public views on using government administrative** data** for research:
reporting from the recent dialogues by the ESRC and ONS*
*Time: **16 May 2014, 13:00 – 16:00 **(lunch included)*
*Venue: **Wellcome Trust, **215 Euston Road, **London*

As was highlighted at the spotlight meeting on “Private Data, Public Good?”
in July last year, the ESRC and ONS have now completed a major public
dialogue focussing on how the public feel about government administrative
data being re-used for research purposes. The Wellcome Trust is hosting a
seminar on 16 May which will report and discuss the findings.

*Background*
During October and November 2013, the Office for National Statistics (ONS)
and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) commissioned IPSOS Mori
to undertake a public dialogue in seven UK locations to explore views on
using government administrative data for research purposes.

The overall objectives were to explore public understanding and views of
administrative data and data linking. The dialogue focused on two uses of
administrative data, one that is currently being established and one that
may go ahead in future:

   - The new ESRC-funded Administrative Data Research Network (ADRN) that
was set up in late 2013
   - The potential use of administrative data linking as one of the options
for conducting the 2021 census (alongside an annual survey).

*The Seminar*
This seminar will highlight the findings from the dialogue as well as
showcase how they are being used. It will also explore with participants
what further work is needed in this area. We would be delighted if you
could attend.

To register for the seminar please email your name, contact number and
organisation to *events at esrc.ac.uk* <events at esrc.ac.uk>

We hope very much to see you there.
