[wdmmg-dev] OKF Mapping infrastructure / Mapnik Server

Hi,

when Gregor dropped by in Berlin last Week, one of the pet projects we
discussed was setting up a Mapnik server for OKF. This could be used
to dynamically generate tiles and vector maps for OpenSpending but
also for other projects (HyperNotes, CKAN WFS overlays, etc....).
Mapnik seems to be a kind of "set up once and run for a lot of things"
infrastructure and Gregor wants to lead on the setup.

Would it be possible for OKF to allocate a machine for this purpose?
It probably doesn't yet directly contribute to any projects but I can
see it being used from OpenSpending etc. very soon. Also it would be
lots of fun.

p.s. Gregor also points out Wikipedia UK SVG maps are terrible. Close
your eyes and think of England!
